This year’s Poughkeepsie Regatta will be a sprint race rather than a head race. The date is moving from October to Saturday, August 8, and the format is a 1000 M six-lane sprint.
These changes will result in better weather and time for more events. Events for 1X’s & 2X’s have been added, and races will start at 8:00 AM, an hour later than in 2025, to make it easier for crews traveling.
First-place medals will be awarded to the winners of all races with 2 or more entries. There will not be medals for second and third place.

The Hudson River Rowing Association and Mid Hudson Rowing Association will be co-sponsoring a 3-mile rowing race on the Hudson River in Poughkeepsie on Saturday, October 5, 2024. Named after the historic Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) Regatta (1895 – 1949), described in The Boys int he Boat, the new Poughkeepsie Regatta will be held on the historic course once used for the national collegiate championship races.
Races are scheduled to run from 7:30 AM to 10:30 AM. The start is at the Culinary Institute of America’s main campus in Hyde Park and the finish is under the Mid-Hudson Bridge in Poughkeepsie.
Spectators can watch the races from Poughkeepsie at Quiet Cove Park, Waryas Park, and Kaal Rock Park. For the best views, hike out onto The Walkway Over the Hudson, from which the start will be visible to the north and the finish to the south.
Crews from the Hudson Valley area will convene at the Hudson River Rowing Association Community Boathouse to compete in Junior, Collegiate, and Masters events. Spectators will see 3 types of boats racing: Fours (4 people with 4 oars and a coxswain), Eights (8 people with 8 oars and a coxswain), and Quads (4 people with 8 oars).

Water was choppy with larger waves forming around 9 AM when the current switched from ebb to flood. Subsequently, the course was shortened from 3 miles (4800 M) to 2 miles (3200 M).

Boats racing will include singles (1 person), doubles (2 person), quads (4 person), fours (4 person with a coxswain) and eights (8 person with a coxswain).
